[Lorine's 1861 Census Note] Found little Frances [Francis] as a 3 year old boy with his family in East Stonehouse, Devon in 1861. His father was William Shenton born abt 1824 Dawlish, Devon, England, his mother Sarah, a laundress, born abt 1824 also in Dawlish, England. Francis had a younger brother Frederick born about 1860 in Dawlish. We can see that this is his brother with him in the orphanage. I think Frederick and Francis were really half-orphans, as I found a woman I am sure is their mother alive and well in the 1871 census -- along with 3 other children. In all likelihood Sarah's husband was dead and she could not provide for 5 children.
You can search for these boys or any others, by using the links provided. In this case, since Sarah was living with her mother, you would have her maiden name and lots of good details on her parents -- all from census records!
